Directs the Newhouse School’s activities in scholastic journalism, including organizing annual ESSPA conference for high school students which includes planning workshops and an awards ceremony. Directs annual School Press Institute on campus each summer. Develops scholastic journalism camps, youth programs and summer programs. Develops relationships with high schools throughout the local community, region, and nation to build a pipeline of prospective students interested in careers in the field of journalism.

Works with the recruitment team on a variety of admissions and engagement-related activities including communicating with prospective families, planning and participating in campus visiting and outreach events, giving presentations, and providing support to Newhouse student organizations and activities.

This role will work to identify, establish and cultivate relationships with high schools throughout the local community, region and nation to foster interest in scholastic journalism and inspire prospective students regarding careers in journalism.

Direct the Newhouse School’s activities in scholastic journalism. Plan and organize annual Empire State School Press Association conference for high school students; including workshops and an awards ceremony. Securing workshop teachers; all logistics regarding planning and hosting a conference; execution of details related to all aspects of event. Directs annual School Press Institute on campus each summer. Work with appropriate offices on campus for a program bringing high school students to campus. Develop high school journalism camps and other youth programs related to scholastic journalism.

Work with recruitment team in a variety of admissions and engagement-related activities including communication with prospective families, planning and participating in campus visiting and outreach events, giving presentations and providing support to Newhouse student organizations and activities. Conduct on-campus information sessions 3-5 times weekly; lead building tours as needed; meet with prospective families in person and online; field phone and email inquiries; assist with planning and implementation of both on campus and virtual visiting events in fall, spring and summer; converse with external transfer applicants.

Please note, this job entails: 

  • Travel to high schools to meet students and guidance counselors.
  • Attendance at scholastic journalism events.
  • Recruitment events and travel related to Newhouse School admissions.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and journalism experience in either a professional or scholastic setting.
  • Strong communication skills, flexibility, creativity, innovative and exceptional organizational skills.
  • Event planning and experience working with high school students and guidance counselors helpful. Ability and willingness to travel.
  • Ability to inspire high school and prospective college students regarding careers in journalism.
