POSITION AND DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The Department of Journalism + Media in the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) at Florida International University invites applications for a full-time appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Clinical Professor of Professional Practice.

The department’s teaching philosophy is to educate by doing. The successful candidate will help support our commitment to experiential learning. To that end, we are seeking a faculty member with significant active journalistic experience in broadcast on-air, in-field and online media news production, and newsroom management, who wants to collaborate in shaping the future of the department’s evolving South Florida Media Network complex and its various student media in its new state-of-the-art Broadcast Journalism Studio at the Biscayne Bay Campus in North Miami.

Currently, the department publishes the South Florida Media Network (SFMN) with content  from our bureaus in Miami, New York and Washington, D.C.; Inspicio (a digital arts magazine); and dedicated courses. Candidates will be expected to collaborate enthusiastically with colleagues to prepare course work for publication.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities and required skills include: Instructing students in core, intermediate and advanced skills courses; being well-versed in storytelling; implementing a broadcast newsroom action plan; coordinating news productions; editorial decision-making; coaching, directing, and supervising the productions of student reporters in collaboration with the news director of the SFMN; and helping students identify the most important, sensitive, and complex stories.

The position will require the candidate to work collaboratively with faculty, students, the Chair of the department, and the Dean of the College.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will bring substantial active professional and/or academic experience to team up with faculty on teaching disciplines such as journalistic storytelling, broadcast journalism, utilizing social media as journalistic tools, news show production (iNews experience required), understanding audiences, analytics, and more.  A minimum of a master’s degree is required. This is a full-time 9-month, multi-year, non-tenure earning clinical professional practice appointment (initial appointment of 3 years) and is renewable upon mutual consent.
