The Center for Rural Strategies seeks a full-time Associate Editor/Digital Producer to work on the Daily Yonder (an online rural news and information hub) and the organization’s other media products.

Job Description

The Associate Editor/Digital Producer will help produce, edit, and curate content that reflects the diverse landscapes and people of rural America. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Editing articles produced by volunteer and paid correspondents around the country.
  • Writing headlines, captions, and other copy for the Daily Yonder or other Rural Strategies products.
  • Selecting and editing photos and illustrations to accompany stories.
  • Posting content to the web and other platforms via content management systems such as WordPress.
  • Reporting on rural policy and related topics.
  • Producing graphs, maps, and other images.
  • Managing data via spreadsheets and similar applications.
  • Helping manage and recruit new contributors to a national network of correspondents who produce content for the Daily Yonder and other Rural Strategies projects.
  • Supporting the work of the Editor of the Daily Yonder and other staff as needed.

Job Requirements

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Newswriting and editing (preferred) or other mass-media communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in computer applications used to write, edit, produce, and manage a wide range of text, graphics, data, and other information.
  • Knowledge of, or commitment to learn about, diverse rural people, places, and policies.
  • Commitment to continued professional development and learning.

Qualifications

  • At least one to three years’ professional experience in communications, journalism, research, or a related field (preferred). Entry-level applicants may describe internships, volunteer positions, or other experience that address this requirement.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex information in a manner that is accurate and accessible to general audiences.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic work environment that requires both collaboration and individual initiative.
  • College degree (preferred).

Location

The preferred work location of the Associate Editor/Digital Producer is the Center for Rural Strategies’ office in Knoxville, Tennessee. Other possible locations are Whitesburg, Kentucky, and Athens, Tennessee, where we have additional offices. Telecommuting from a remote location is possible and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The job requires some regional and national travel. Additional travel will be necessary if the Associate Editor/Digital Producer works from a remote location.
