Occupational Summary 
As a member of the University Communications team and in consultation with the Climate Action Task Force, the Climate Communications Coordinator will develop and implement a comprehensive strategic communications and marketing plan for the university-wide Climate Initiative, an interdisciplinary effort touching all facets of the university, involving all Duke schools.

Work Performed 

  • In consultation with the Climate Action Committee and Climate Advisory Council, develop and implement a comprehensive strategic communications and marketing plan for the university-wide Climate Initiative, an interdisciplinary effort touching all facets of the university, involving all Duke schools.
  • In advance of the September 29, 2022 Climate Initiative launch event, manage the creation of a robust web presence that showcases the breadth and depth of the initiative, representing the many different research aspects involved, the climate and sustainability work that has been carried out over the last 30 years, and offering points of engagement for all main audience sectors: alumni and donors, prospective and current students, faculty and staff, media and community members. Once built, regularly update and maintain website.
  • Advise and direct marketing efforts including internal engagement strategies, audience awareness, and digital and social media.
  • Interact effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders including the Climate Action Committee and Climate Advisory Council members, University leadership, communications colleagues from the Nicholas School of the Environment, the newly merged Energy Initiative and the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy, Sustainable Duke, University Development and other stakeholders as they emerge. Build and nurture internal stakeholder relationships
  • Work closely with University Communications and other Duke units to produce and share content highlighting the important work of the Climate Initiative, and in support of the Initiative’s strategic priorities.  
  • Build a strategic communications plan to engage external influencers and stakeholders.
  • Chair the Climate Communications Subcommittee made up communications stakeholders from across the university.
  • Participate as a member of the Climate Action Committee.
  • Coordinate with colleagues in University Development as climate develops as a funding priority in the next campaign.

Minimum Qualifications

Work requires the ability to perform creative writing and related activities such as conducting interviews and research, and copy editing normally acquired through attainment of a bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English or a related discipline.

Work requires two years of directly related writing experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Department’s Preferred Qualifications   

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum five years experience in strategic communications, marketing or a related field.
  • Superior writing, editing and content creation skills.
