The Climate Desk at the New York Times is looking for a climate science reporter with a strong knowledge of the science of global warming and a demonstrated ability to write with power and clarity. Candidates should have a track record of ambitious, rigorous and exclusive reporting that has shaped the conversation on climate and advanced our understanding of it.
Applicants should be well versed in current research and well sourced in the research community, and able to convey the science to Times readers in a clear and accessible way. They should have a body of work that shows broad intellectual curiosity, a sharp eye for recognizing overstatement, a command of complex and varied topics, and storytelling skill that brings each story vividly to life for readers. Candidates should be able to show how they have landed scoops and owned a beat, written razor-sharp explainers and constructed gripping long-form narratives.
The ability to work as part of a team with visual reporters — photographers, videographers and data visualizers — is essential. That teamwork has led to the kinds of inventive visual and data-driven journalism that the Times’s Climate Desk has pioneered. Collegiality and collaboration are highly valued.
