Overview
Ensure that articles, videos and other editorial content are free of errors and typos, conform to AP and house style and are easy to read; manage house style guide and work with editors and writers to constantly improve the quality and readability of our work while demonstrating CPM’s values of integrity, community, innovation and diversity.
- Salary Range: $60,048 minimum – salary commensurate with experience

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
- Ensure that all editorial content (including articles, videos, newsletters, photo captions, etc.) is free of grammatical, punctuation and spelling errors
- Check that names, places and organizations are spelled properly and that dates and statistics are accurate
- Help ensure that articles, videos and other content are factual. This may involve contacting writers’ sources and conducting online research
- Ensure that articles speak respectfully and in culturally appropriate terms to all the communities in the Puget Sound area and beyond
- Develop and maintain house style guide, alert editorial staff to additions and changes
- Enforce AP and house styles
- Work closely with writers, suggesting changes to enhance articles’ readability, conciseness and style
- Assist in the writing of headlines, story summaries and captions
- Assist editorial team with story development and editing when requested, working with staff writers and freelancers to craft clear, compelling copy that captures audiences online
- Assist in special projects when requested, including scripting daily news briefs and crafting daily email newsletters
- Maintain familiarity with trends in language, word usage, style and linguistic sensitivities, as well as forms of storytelling and other issues in journalism
- Identify and work with editors to address potential red-flag issues, including offensive language, unfairness, inaccuracies and libel
- Provide feedback on existing workflows and collaborate with Managing Editor to improve processes involving the production of Crosscut journalism
- Collaborate with other team members to foster a positive and productive culture and contribute toward the overall growth of the CPM

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Familiarity with quantitative journalism, statistics and data
- Proficient in copy editing and proof-reading; commitment to ongoing technical skill development as relates to position
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
- Adept at working both independently and collaboratively to accomplish goals and objectives within deadlines
- Ability to support and anticipate needs of leadership and fast-paced operations
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent experience
- Five years of experience as an editor in digital journalism
- Experience editing breaking news, features and projects, as well as social media and web production
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to regularly type on a keyboard
- Ability to view data on a computer screen for long periods of time
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
