The search committee invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Journalism and New Media at the University of Mississippi. The School of Journalism and New Media was created in 2009 as an outgrowth of the former Department of Journalism, which was in the College of Liberal Arts. The school offers four degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, Master of Arts in Journalism, Bachelor of Science in Integrated Marketing Communications, and Master of Science in Integrated Marketing Communications, which also includes a fully online degree program.
Students in the School of Journalism and New Media are being prepared for thriving professional careers in media, journalism, and integrated marketing communications through superior education and hands-on, real-world experience at the University of Mississippi. The School enrolls more than 1,400 undergraduate and 130 graduate students annually. The School has enjoyed consistent and sustained growth in its accomplishments in academic and professional areas. The School is home to the Student Media Center and the award winning Daily Mississippian, Rebel Radio, and Newswatch.

Job Information & Qualifications
As chief administrative officer of the School of Journalism and New Media, the Dean, who reports to the Provost, assumes the responsibility for the fiscal and administrative aspects of the School and fosters an environment that enhances the capabilities of a faculty and staff committed to excellence in teaching, integrity, service, and practice. The Dean will provide forward-thinking leadership that unifies the School and promotes a culture of camaraderie and common pursuit. The Dean also must have a demonstrated record of effective managerial leadership skills, clear communication, and specific successful actions and outcomes in diversity, inclusivity, equity, shared governance, and community engagement.
The successful candidate will possess a terminal degree in a relevant discipline within one of the School’s programs or appropriate professional experience and will have to meet the standards for appointment at full professor rank.
Other preferred qualifications include:
- A record of successful senior leadership experience in the academy;
- Understanding of the role of a public R1 university relative to the state of Mississippi, the students, and the profession;
- Ability to develop a bold vision for the future consistent with the University’s strategic plan to promote the continued academic excellence and innovation in both graduate and undergraduate education;
- A record of accomplishments that demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual distinction and an appreciation of the varied disciplines and functions that compose the rich academic tapestry of the School;
- A history of transparent and collaborative leadership practices; and the expertise to guide organizational development and to creatively address issues on the forefront of journalism and new media;
- Commitment to the diversity of students, faculty, and staff and to advancing an equitable and inclusive climate that stimulates excellence;
- Experience with media-related industry and research such as newspapers, broadcast, online/multimedia, digital media, and strategic communications;
- In-depth knowledge of journalism and media trends;
- A track record of successful fundraising with a talent for identifying, cultivating, and leveraging industry partnerships;
- Budget and personnel management experience necessary to administer the affairs of the School and interact effectively with other University administrative officers;
- Strong communication and listening skills and a commitment to openness, collaboration, and shared governance and decision-making;
- A demonstrated commitment to student success and retention.
