Job Summary/Basic Function:
Responsible for developing and executing campus sponsorship programs, and procuring underwriting support for university programs. Develop relationships with corporate and public entities to secure long-term and event-based sponsorship agreements.
Department Overview:
Boise State Public Radio is Idaho’s largest nonprofit, listener-supported NPR member station reaching the region’s metropolitan and rural areas. As the only sources of quality public radio news, classical music, jazz, and unique cultural programming, our radio stations are distinct in their mission, their audience, and their partnerships.
Level Scope:
Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of area typically obtained through higher education combined with experience. Manages large projects or processes and problems faced are difficult and often complex; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures. May manage experience professionals who exercise latitude and independence in assignments, spending the majority of time (50% or more) achieving organizational objectives through the coordinated achievements of subordinate staff.
Essential Functions:
- Develop a sponsorship strategy/program to maximize sponsorship opportunities for the campus
- Work with departments and colleges to ascertain their needs and develop sponsorship opportunities
- Develop creative, sellable inventory to introduce to the marketplace
- Solicitation of diverse individuals, businesses and corporations on behalf of Boise State University in accordance with the larger fundraising goals of the university.
- Manage sponsorship accounts receivables, promptly resolve past due accounts
- Generate revenue through a high volume of sponsorship activity
- Supervises all related fiscal operations to ensure the practice of sound business techniques
- Develop creative, sellable inventory to introduce to the marketplace
- Negotiate and execute sponsorship agreements; develop tracking system to manage agreements
- Reporting to General Manager, this position is instrumental in helping the station achieve its fundraising goals and is responsible for the development goals, budgets, and staff for the station’s corporate support (underwriting), Broadcast Society (major gifts), and membership teams. Helps to develop the strategy and secure the execution of individual and business fundraising for the station.
- Corporate Support / Underwriting.
- Responsible for attaining station budget goals by maximizing revenues achieved through the implementation of systems, market strategies, the manager’s own direct sales, and supervision of the sales team.
- Promote the station through community engagement.
- Manage both underwriting and in-kind agreements.
- Inspire, motivate, and empower the sales team to strengthen relationships, cultivate new sponsors, and set clear team goals.
- Membership & Major Gift Development.
- Responsible for attaining station goals by maximizing revenues achieved through the implementation of systems, membership drive strategies, major donor relationships, and supervision of the membership development team.
- Serve as the development lead to manage the operations, including working with staff to develop and meet fundraising goals from conception to the analysis of results.
- Guide the Broadcast Society Manager (Major Gifts Officer) to increase major donor support and cultivate new major donors.
- Manage relationships with other station departments and volunteers involved in membership drives.
- Participate in leadership team meetings to promote and foster station relationships.
- Work closely with the business manager to ensure financial operations and reporting meet policy and compliance standards.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Good communication skills, including diplomacy, writing correspondence, and oral presentations to individuals and groups.
- Ability to negotiate agreements.
- Understanding of budgets and financial reporting.
- Understanding of the demographic and psychographic makeup of the audience.
- Demonstrated organizational skills, including the ability to anticipate problems before they arise.
- Knowledge and experience in professional practices of major gift and annual giving fundraising.
- Demonstrated ability to ask for monetary support and secure significant gifts.
- Proven ability to oversee and write on-air announcements meeting FCC requirements for underwriter mentions and membership drive breaks.
- Knowledge of supervisory skills and practices to motivate and manage staff.
- Ability to create and analyze data and reporting.
- Knowledge of the local market including decision-makers, local events, and key accounts.
- Understands and uses industry tools such as Nielsen, Tapscan, Marketron, Greater Public, Raiser’s Edge, and Google Ad Manager.
- Highly organized and creative with knowledge of required sales skills with a willingness to grow through training and embrace new techniques and ideas.
- Thorough understanding of media planning, sales, and fundraising.
- Computer proficiency with spreadsheet, word processing, presentation, and CRM experience.
- Strong judgment, sense of ethics, integrity, and accountability.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate, manage, and retain new business.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 5 years of professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Public media experience with areas of focus on business development and achieving revenue goals.
- Experience managing and supervising teams.
- Experience in membership/fund development.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary of $78,000-$87,000/per year.
