The Center for Public Integrity is one of the leading nonprofit news organizations in the country. Founded in 1989, we are also among the first nonprofit investigative journalism organizations in the nation. As we enter our fourth decade, Public Integrity is seeking a new and dynamic leader for the newsroom to work alongside the CEO in designing and managing the next generation of award-winning reporting. This person will manage an experienced team of two dozen journalists and researchers focused on stories that expose injustice and hold the powerful accountable. We are a leader in using FOIA lawsuits to bring critical information to the public. Our investigations have led to major impact: policy changes by federal and state agencies; legislation; editorials and op-eds; and broad use of our data by journalists around the nation to produce local investigative reporting.

We seek an Editor-in- Chief who can guide, support, and challenge us to honor that commitment and produce the highest impact investigative journalism.
The Editor-in-Chief directly oversees the newsroom, manages its budget and leads the overall execution for the investigative work of the organization. In close collaboration with the CEO and the Executive Editor, the Editor-in-Chief will design and implement the strategic vision and planning for the editorial mission of the organization. The Editor-in-Chief will also direct staff performance, retention and recruitment as the organization continues to evolve in response to changes in the news industry as well as demographic change in the nation. The leadership of the Editor-in- Chief will be central to Public Integrity’s overall engagement and accountability to the communities it covers and the coverage it provides.
- Develop and deliver singular coverage on critical issues

- Run selected projects directly
- Oversee multi-platform investigative projects intended for diverse audiences
- Manage the newsroom budget
- Manage and strengthen outside partnerships and reporting networks that align with Public Integrity’s mission
- Shape newsroom policies and practices
- Partner with CEO on creating new platforms, products and spaces for community engagement
- Partner with Executive Editor to ensure stories are original, well-crafted and visually appealing
- A minimum of 10 years of editing and management experience
- Demonstrated history of delivering investigative journalism with impact
- Experience in leading organizational change
- Progressive experience in using digital tools innovatively to amplify story impact
- Demonstrated success in producing content for diverse and marginalized communities
