Intern, Digital Writing and Reporting – Newsroom

This internship will help the newsroom with the following:

  • Providing digital first content — including video, social posts and stories told in alternative formats
  • Assisting the newsroom in producing MPR’s website, various social channels and working on distribution of MPR’s content
  • Growing MPR’s social engagement, video views, as well as growing new users
  • Participate in the planning stages of coverage of the 2020 election

Key Learning Goals:

  • Improve on the depth of their reporting skills
  • Improve on the breadth of their writing skills
  • Learn how to write in various formats, for various digital platforms
  • Gain or improve upon prior knowledge related to search engine optimization, web metrics and success measurements for digital work


  • Make calls and gather information from news sources
  • Write stories platforms
  • Generate story ideas
  • Assist with other production tasks
  • Other tasks as assigned


  • Partial subsidy for onsite parking or bus transportation. Day to day transportation is your responsibility.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have access to a vehicle available for use. 
  • Must have a valid, current driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior journalism experience in student media or other internships
  • Understanding of social media tools
  • Comfort with web publishing systems
  • Basic understanding of photo and video cameras
