The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a 2019 Pulitzer Prize winner for Breaking News and 2020 Pulitzer finalist for Local Reporting, is looking for a dynamic and innovative Managing Editor responsible for directing the day-to-day operations of Western Pennsylvania’s largest local news organization. 

Partnering closely with the newly appointed Executive Editor, this is a key leadership role in the P-G’s accelerated transformation effort. This position requires a proven leader with impeccable news judgment, unassailable journalistic integrity, a commitment to diversity, an instinct for digital innovation, significant editing experience, established management and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across all divisions of the newsroom and organization. 

This editor oversees all elements of the daily digital and print news report, with a heavy focus on breaking news, deep enterprise reporting, high-impact investigative projects and innovative digital storytelling.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with the Executive Editor and masthead editors to develop an overarching content strategy, as well as with the digital and print leadership on content workflows to maximize audience engagement and growth.
  • Managing a team of department heads to help execute on an overall content strategy and direct a digital-first, audience-centered newsroom. 
  • Editing a range of stories across beats; act as a quality control stalwart for everything from a 4,000-word feature to a quick follow-up story.
  • Working side-by-side with our digital, social and award-winning visual teams to ensure the P-G’s journalism excels on all platforms to meet audience demands.
  • Collaborating on the execution of news content strategies across emerging platforms.
  • Assisting with talent recruitment, hiring, and staff development across the newsroom.
  • Representing, as necessary, the P-G both externally and internally as a leader in the organization.
  • Partnering with the leaders of all divisions of the company and outlets in the Pittsburgh news ecosystem, as appropriate.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or related field required
  • Minimum of 10 years of journalism experience as an editor preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years of management experience preferred supervising reporters, editors, visual and digital news teams and overseeing a budget
  • Exceptional ability to write and edit
  • A proven track record of sound news judgment and editing skills, an audience-centered and digital first acumen, and proven execution at the highest levels
  • A firm grasp and knowledge of the region’s major issues OR a proven track record of quickly adapting to a new geographic area
  • Robust management skills, an eye for editorial talent, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and a track record of developing journalists
  • Proven skills and proficiency using a wide range of technology, digital tools
  • The highest journalistic and legal standards and a track record of sound ethical decision-making
  • A collaborative spirit, and the ability to work and lead across departments
