The Confederated Umatilla Journal, owned by the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR), is looking to hire a managing editor to help elevate our 7,000-circulation monthly newspaper.
We’re seeking candidates who are versatile, enthusiastic and are passionate about journalism in the digital age. We cover the happenings of the three Tribes that form the confederation here – the Cayuse, the Umatilla and the Walla Walla — which all have extensive histories (individual and collective) that continue into present day. Our future managing editor will actively cover the tribal government to provide timely, accurate information to its membership; will develop a rapport with tribal members and elders that allow for powerful, untold stories to be brought to light; and will be a camera-wielding fixture in the community at cultural and sporting events.
The Tribes call their headquarters “Nixyaawii” (Nik-ee-ah-way), which is a sacred area where tall groves of quaking aspens once stood over bubbling springs. Our office is located at Nixyaawii Governance Center in Mission, Oregon which is centrally located between Spokane, Washington and Portland, and is close to the Blue Mountains and the Columbia River.
