KCUR 89.3, Kansas City’s NPR affiliate, is looking for an experienced journalist to oversee the day-to-day news operation and reporting. The News Director’s primary responsibility will be to ensure efficiency in the workflow and distribution of journalism of the highest order.

Basic Function and Responsibility
Responsible for providing day-to-day execution of KCUR’s news strategy. This position reports directly to the Director of Journalism.
- Coach, supervise and edit the work of reporters, newscasters, talk show teams and freelancers who provide content for broadcast and digital platforms.
- Work with director of journalism, peer editors and cross-departmental colleagues to build a content strategy that ensures KCUR is committed to delivering coverage that builds loyalty among existing audiences and grows new ones.
- Oversee staff scheduling, ensuring appropriate reporting and editing coverage.
- Work with peer editors to expand the diversity of voices included in KCUR’s journalism on all platforms.
- Participate in appropriate fund-raising and outreach activities, on air and off.
- Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, education or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and at least five years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired.
- Five to seven years of experience working with a public media or news organization.
- Proven news judgment and journalistic integrity.
- Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment.
- Ability to plan, develop budgets and implement projects.
- Experience editing audio and digital stories and tailoring the story to the medium.
- Proficiency with Adobe Audition or other audio editing programs.
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with both internal and external audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with various personalities.
- Ability to multi-task and oversee diverse projects simultaneously in a fast paced, deadline-oriented environment.
- Ability and willingness to work a varied schedule.
