Journalists: Ready for a change?

The BLM Montana/Dakotas State Office is looking for a motivated, talented individual to join our small, vibrant, Communications/Public Affairs staff.

We’re seeking a candidate with proven multi-media journalism skills who is looking for a new career opportunity in service to the American public.

If you’re a hard charger with mad skills and daily deadline experience, you may be just the person we need to help us implement an aggressive, cutting edge, 21st century approach to public information and stakeholder engagement.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate for this position will be expected to:

Identify potential stories much like that of a newspaper city editor or broadcast assignment editor, and then work individually or with staff at the state or district offices to turn these story ideas into finished products.

Craft active, succinct word pictures for a variety of hard copy and online end products.

Create infographics and capture compelling digital still and moving video images for public outreach utilizing traditional and social media.

Write, shoot, edit, and produce smartphone-originated TV news style video packages within short timeframes.

Develop comprehensive communication plans (a.k.a. media campaigns) which include appropriate high level messaging and demonstrable, measurable, effective engagement and outreach.

Think on their feet and have the personal presence and ability to speak in soundbites on-camera under and pressure to local, regional, and national media outlets.

Serve as an in-house expert on public outreach and engagement in order to provide unvarnished and valued counsel to program leads and managers.

Develop and nurture strong internal and external working relationships with individuals from divergent backgrounds.

Become qualified and occasionally serve as an incident Public Information Officer on wildland fires and other unplanned and planned events.

Exercise extraordinary judgment and time management skills to help lead the Montana/Dakotas Communications/Public Affairs team.

Starting salary $62,236 and up, depending on experience.
