We’re conducting a national search for a Senior Editor at The California Sunday Magazine. This position is full-time, based in our Bay Area office, Los Angeles, or New York.
Senior editors are responsible for gathering and generating story ideas, finding new writers, editing ambitious features and packages (like our new, themed Shorts department), and contributing to a variety of projects throughout the organization. We’re interested in vivid characters, engrossing plots, and deep reporting from across California, the West, Asia, and Latin America—all for a national audience. You’ll work with prominent journalists as well as emerging talents. You should be full of ideas, and believe that this is an exciting time to be making media.
Launched at the end of 2014, California Sunday has been a finalist for thirteen National Magazine Awards, including for Feature Writing, Reporting, Photography, Design, General Excellence, and Magazine of the Year, and a winner three times. The Society of Publication Designers named California Sunday the Magazine of the Year in 2018 and 2019. A number of our features have been optioned for television or film. We also produce the acclaimed live event series Pop-Up Magazine, which presents new reported stories by writers, radio producers, photographers, and documentary filmmakers at large venues across the country, like Lincoln Center and BAM Howard Gilman Opera House in New York; Davies Symphony Hall, the Paramount Theatre, and the Greek Theatre in the Bay Area; and the Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles—and there are opportunities for California Sunday editors to contribute.
The ideal candidate should have at least 5-10 years of experience editing exceptional reported features for a national audience. You should be a sophisticated story editor with a knack for generating lots of ideas. You should be motivated to build a big, diverse network of writers. You should excel at identifying and developing new talent. In all our work, diversity is really important to us.
