Senior Editor, Culture

The Atlantic (New York, New York/Washington, D.C.)

Posted 1 week ago

The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.

The Atlantic is looking for an experienced editor and writer to join the newsroom at an important moment of expansion for the Culture team. This journalist will help build a new initiative that dedicates coverage to some of the most crucial questions underpinning society: How do Americans develop social systems, ideologies, languages, and customs that govern the way we live? How do race, gender, sexuality, and other forms of identity coalesce to create communities, fandoms, and subcultures, and inform how we live? What are the various iterations of American culture and how do they change every day?

Top candidates for this position have a track record of commissioning and executing complicated features. They have exceptional editing skills with a sharp eye toward analysis and argumentation. They are endlessly curious about exploring different cultures, surfacing untold stories, and finding the throughlines within modern-day and historical societies.

In addition to editing, this role includes writing, and the ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about both. We’re looking for someone who has existing relationships with a diverse array of strong freelance writers, is full of ideas and excited about conceptualizing stories, is collaborative, and is able to juggle a variety of projects across overlapping timelines. This person will report to a senior editor on the Culture team.

Job duties will include

  • Editing features, analysis, essays, reportage, and quick-turn stories
  • Writing on news moments as well as long-term pieces
  • Constantly generating new ideas
  • Assigning stories and scouting writers to help build a freelance base
  • Helping to plan ambitious, big-picture series
  • Liaising with copy edit and art teams on stories, and producing articles in our CMS
  • Fact-checking and research
