The Daily Kos Education Fund, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, seeks to identify, support, and promote the voices of marginalized leaders and journalists, centering their personal stories along with the issues facing their communities. We will leverage Daily Kos’s reach to educate a growing progressive readership using multiple channels, including in-depth reporting, personal storytelling, podcasts, and video. Our mission is to elevate diverse stories from diverse communities, inform people about critical social justice issues, and share the perspectives of those most affected by injustice.
Reporting to the Managing Editor and Deputy Managing Editor, each Senior Reporter anchors a specific topic—a vertical—in which they have real experience or deep interest.
As the primary content-producer, this Senior Reporter will be responsible for coming up with story ideas that advance our meta-narrative around voting rights. They must be passionate about exploring how current norms surrounding race, gender, and sexual orientation, for example, affect access to the polls. In this role, they’ll get to expose problems, dissect them, and highlight solutions and the people driving them. This reporter will also be fluent in a number of formats, comfortable with anything from a long-form essay or a profile of a local politician to investigative reporting and FOIA requests.
The Senior Reporter must excel at collaboration, as they will work closely with the Managing Editor and Deputy Managing Editor as well as Voting Rights Senior Fellows. Senior Fellows establish the big ideas that will guide the vertical’s narrative; the Senior Reporter will delve into and advance these ideas through their contributions. Finally, this person will be excited not just to contribute to DKEF’s work on voting rights but for the opportunity to innovate, trying new ways to tell stories and connect with people, from multimedia additions to articles to podcasting and video.
We believe the experiences of people of color, LGBTQ persons, and women should be centered in our work and we encourage people from these communities to apply to join us. We look forward to hearing from candidates why they are interested and how they would inhabit this role. Applicants should have at least five years’ experience covering ballot initiatives; campaigns; legislative bodies and/or government generally; and general assignments. Experience covering criminal justice issues a plus. Your application should reflect what you’ve done, what you can do, and what you would—or would want to—do as a Senior Reporter at DKEF.
To apply, please create a single document file that includes the following, in this order:
• A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.
• Your resume–one to two pages–including a link to your LinkedIn profile and personal website, if you have one.
• Links to no fewer than three pieces you’re proud of. The links should include a recent example that demonstrates your ability to take a deep look at a complex subject across two or more related stories.
• Links to no fewer than three voting rights-related pieces by other people you think were done well.
