Crosscut is seeking a full-time editor to coordinate and shape our coverage of the Pacific Northwest’s Native communities. The ideal candidate will serve as an authoritative voice on issues affecting many of the 29 federally recognized Indian tribes and numerous Native communities of Washington state.

The editor will oversee this dedicated beat while managing an editorial calendar, help produce original stories and coordinating coverage alongside other Crosscut editors. In addition, the editor may contribute and manage a small network of freelance journalists. This role is central toward a new editorial project at Crosscut intended to lend focus and commitment to Native communities and issues.

I.  Lead

  1. Working alongside the executive and newsroom editors, help to influence the overall growth of the Crosscut newsroom success and audience strategies for our nonprofit public media newsroom
  2. Directly responsible for managing Crosscut’s tribal affairs audience intiative
  3. Responsible for managing section calendar, projecting story production costs and ensuring operational efficiencies when approving new projects

II. Audience Impact

  1. Expected to directly contribute to Crosscut’s original reporting
  2. Assign and edit news stories from staff and freelance writers, ensuring their reporting meets journalistic and organizational standards for fairness, thoroughness, sensitivity and quality
  3. Collaborate with Crosscut photographers, videographers and web developers in the newsroom to create stories that are visually compelling and incorporate a range of media
  4. Plan and closely interface with internal Audience Engagement team to amplify and engage with Crosscut’s growing digital audiences ahead of scheduled tribal affairs stories

III. Represent

  1. Serve as a Cascade Public Media thought-leader and representative at community and partner events, industry gatherings and in other formal settings
  2. Collaborate and present partnership opportunities across local and regional tribal communities
  3. Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice


  1. Bachelor’s Degree in broadcasting, journalism, communications, new media, business, or a related field or equivalent experience required
  2. At least four years of experience as an editor or reporter in a deadline-oriented environment; tribal affairs-related environment preferred
  3. Strong command of AP grammar and style
  4. Passionate and keenly versed in regional tribal affairs
  5. Ideal candidates will have strong line editing and organizational skills
  6. Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with peers; significant experience organizing and managing multiple priorities, and in developing and managing projects
  7. Excellent oral and written communication skills
  8. Excellent interpersonal skills for building and fostering key internal and external relationships, as well as the ability to mentor less experienced employees
  9. Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment
  10. Deep understanding of journalism ethics and practices, with nonprofit or public media experience preferred


  1. Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid Washington State driver license
  2. Ability to work a varied schedule, including evening, weekends, and some holidays required
  3. Ability to regularly type on a keyboard
  4. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
