The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world’s population sees AP journalism every day.
The Associated Press seeks a video journalist with a history of successful television and online video storytelling to join its dynamic team in Washington. This job comes with an expansive assignment that includes covering stories about democracy and voting and producing explanatory journalism about elections in the United States. Responsibilities:
In this role, you will shoot, write, edit and produce video stories, including live video, for AP’s broadcast, digital and mobile customers and platforms. You will conduct interviews, write scripts and edit footage in different styles – from raw cuts to fully writing text stories and shooting photos – to help produce a competitive and comprehensive all-formats news report. You will collaborate with colleagues across all platforms to produce spot and enterprise video stories.
Your work will serve a global, digital-first audience, with the goal of combatting misinformation and misunderstanding about and within the American democracy via rich and robust explanatory journalism. You’re a journalist who relishes finding new ways to explain complex topics so that they can be both easily understood and resonate with diverse audiences around the world.
We’re looking for someone who will:
- have a great news sense, with the ability to consistently generate distinctive video stories for national and global audiences.
- collaborate with a diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats – text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics – to deliver spot news and enterprise coverage that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP.
- pursue innovative and inclusive coverage strategies while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
Qualifications:
You should have advanced technical skills in creating video content, as well as the ability to work within an all-formats team to apply those skills from start to finish on breaking news and short- and long-term projects. Applicants should be creative, innovative and agile and work effectively in a deadline-driven newsroom, and be able and willing to work any shift – including at night and on weekends – as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.
We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.
Other qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least two years of full-time work as a newsroom developer or visual journalist a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet or AP bureau.
- Advanced-level professional competency in video shooting and non-linear editing, preferably with Adobe Premiere.
- All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or be able to gain permission to do so.
- Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in another language besides English is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.
