Writers for the State Chronicles
What on Earth Publishing (Remote)
What on Earth Publishing (whatonearthbooks.com) seeks writers for the State Chronicles series, nonfiction books for children in grades 4-8 commissioned in partnership with the America250 Foundation (america250.org). The books are structured as a series of 60-80 newspaper articles written in faux “contemporary” style, each covering the history of a U.S. state’s territory from prehistory to today. The books will focus on the diverse perspectives and experiences of the people that lived in and shaped these areas over time. Topics include sports victories, scientific discoveries, Indigenous celebration days, wars and conflicts, civil rights milestones, and much more. Writing will be assigned on a per-article basis according to writer preference, interest, and expertise.
Ideal candidates will have experience writing non-fiction for children, preferably history-related topics, or else experience writing newspaper-style articles that can be edited to the appropriate reading level. We are committed to providing children with a variety of diverse voices and perspectives, and writers of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
